Surgical Techniques and Outcomes of Repairing Meniscal Radial Tears: A Systematic Review

Study Purpose
This study involved a review of medical literature to learn about patient outcomes after surgeries to repair radial meniscus tears. meniscus is repaired versus partially removed.
Participants
The researchers reviewed articles about patient studies that met the following criteria:
- Published between 1980 and 2014
- Patients were followed up for at least 24 months after surgery
- Included data on patient outcomes after radial meniscal repair
Outcomes
After their repairs, patients in these studies completed a medical survey called the Lysholm Scale that asked them to rate different aspects of their knee health including pain, instability, locking, swelling, limp, ability to climb stairs, ability to squat, and needing support to move. Based on their responses, each patient was given a score of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better knee function with fewer symptoms. During follow-up, each patient provided their Tegner Activity scores, a grade that indicates their ability to be active after their repair.
Timeframe
The researchers looked at short-term outcomes, with average time of follow-ups between 24 and 71 months after surgery.
Main Findings
- There were six patient studies included in this review
- Average Lysholm scores after surgery ranged from 86.9 to 95.6 out of 100 across all studies, indication very good knee function
- Average Tegner activity scores after surgery ranged from 1 (fairly sedentary) to 6.7 (plays recreation or competitive sports several times a week)
- Outcomes were very similar across all different surgical techniques used to repair the meniscal tears.
Key Message
This study shows that patients who have radial meniscal repairs have very good short-term outcomes.
